I come from a family that has always created handmade items. Throughout the family, we have those who knit, crochet, sew, quilt, embroider, bake, sculpt, paint, draw, design and sew costumes and create jewellery. These skills have been handed down from generation to generation.
People who buy handmade buy it for many reasons, they buy it because they are helping a small business, they appreciate the time and energy that went into the items they buy, rather than buying mass produced work. Here are some of my thoughts on buying handmade.
By giving a handmade gift you have avoided parking and long lines of big stores in favor of something more meaningful. Buying handmade gifts means you care enough about someone to buy something as unique as they are! The giver feels the satisfaction of supporting an artist or craftperson, the recipient receives something that is one-of-a-kind, and made with care and attention that can be seen and touched.
Chain stores and global manufacturing has us dressing and decorating our homes alike. We are encouraged to consume. Ties to the human sources of our goods have been lost. Buying handmade (or creating ourselves) helps us express our true selves and reconnect. It’s the difference between buying something that was made carefully and with love rather then buying one of a million machine manufactured items. Support local artisans and craftspeople, not large stores.
Buying handmade shows our children that not everything needs to be mass produced. It teaches them to love and appreciate the unique and the imperfect.
