Sequintastic September Reveal

Saturday, September 29
Hello everyone and welcome to my little corner of the Sequintastic September Blog Hop!
Here’s the challenge: Create a piece of work featuring sequins and write a blog post with photos of what has been created.

Firstly a little personal history…

Me and Sequins

Really, it all started when I was five, my mother was told that to help correct weak ankles ballet would be an excellent therapy.

As you would expect of any five year old I loved it! Beautiful music, pretty outfits, having your hair “done up” and for special performances makeup!! As I grew older I helped design the ballet costumes, apply the makeup and fix the head-dresses.

That’s me in the first photo on the left. My first ballet costume, I was a star and my “big girl” was the moon. What you can see in that pic from the 1970’s is that the plain white costume was covered in silver sequins, I even had a silver sequin choker.

Over 13 years and tonnes of sequins later (one included a fully sequined Chinese Dragon that I designed for a costume) I retired from dancing and sewing those dreaded sequins.

When I had two daughters of my own I thought it would be a good idea for them to “have a go” as well. The other four photos are of my two girls in some of their costumes. Unfortunately the most sequin heavy costume I no longer have photos of. It was a mermaid costume covered in strings of sequins and individually sewn cup sequins in sea tones.

So I think you can understand after approximately 31 costumes sequins and I have an interesting relationship.
I wanted to make something simple, useful and to use sequins, not for bling but for colour.

This is the iPad sleeve for my new iPad. Large 25mm flat sequins in assorted colours, aqua 2mm ribbon and some very thick 3mm wool felt. I stitched up the sides with blanket stitch, learnt when I had to darn the toes of my pointe shoes for dance class.

I do believe sequins and I have called a truce, I may even make those shoe buttons with sequins that I have been contemplating all winter.
